Anchor Square

Perhaps the only cast-iron pavement in Russia.
The square is named after the anchor and then anchor-chain warehouse that operated here from 1754 to 1898. Its main rarity is underfoot. The pavement is laid with cast-iron tiles — about 15,000 of them over 200 meters. This is perhaps the only such pavement in Russia; cast-iron slabs exist elsewhere only on the Penkovy Bridge in Kronstadt. In 2012 the pavement was taken up for restoration and returned a year later. Look down — and feel how the cast iron sounds under your heel.
Tip: In the evening the square is illuminated, and the cathedral above it looks especially striking.
