Turquoise-and-white sailors' baroque in quiet Kolomna.

St. Nicholas Cathedral is the first naval cathedral where sailors of the Russian fleet prayed. It is one of the brightest monuments of Elizabethan baroque. The cathedral gave names to everything around it: the square, the lane, the market, the Old and New St. Nicholas bridges. Around it stood the barracks of the naval department servants, hence Kanonerskaya Street: a cannoneer means a gunner. Nearby, the stone buildings of the St. Nicholas Market of 1788 have survived. A separate bell tower stands by the canal, and from the Old St. Nicholas Bridge you can see seven bridges at once — Petersburgers have a tradition of making a wish here.

Tip: Stand on the Old St. Nicholas Bridge by the bell tower and count the bridges — there should be seven.
