New Holland

A man-made island of ship timber, where logs were dried the Dutch way.
This island appeared in 1719, when the Kryukov and Admiralty canals were dug between the Neva and the Moika. "Holland" was first the name of the ship timber warehouses near the Admiralty: logs were stored the Dutch way — vertically, on their ends. Later the warehouses were moved here, and the island became "New Holland". The famous Vallin de la Mothe arch over the canal led to a basin where boats with timber sailed in. For almost 300 years the island was closed to townspeople, and now it is one of the liveliest city parks: lawns, cafes, the round building of the former naval prison, the "Bottle".
