⚓ Sea and Fortresses

A medieval fortress on a cliff, recaptured by Alexander Nevsky.

Koporye stands on a high rocky cape twelve kilometers from the gulf. The first wooden fortress here was built by the knights of the Livonian Order in 1240. Already the next year Alexander Nevsky recaptured and destroyed it; during the assault the bogatyr Gavrila Aleksich perished, the very one who later entered the chronicles. In 1280 a stone fortress appeared, it was destroyed and rebuilt again by the Novgorodians, and at the beginning of the 16th century it was rebuilt as we see it now. This is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Russia: mighty towers, an arched bridge and a cliff above the gorge of the Koporka River.

Tip: The climb to the gates over the bridge is steep. In summer there are reenactor festivals, so it gets crowded.
