Ivangorod Fortress

Two fortresses look at each other across a border river.
In the summer of 1492, by decree of Ivan III, a fortress was built on Devichya Gora above the Narva in a single summer and named in honor of the sovereign. The site was chosen boldly: right opposite the Livonian fortress of Narva. On three sides Ivangorod is protected by the river, which makes a sharp bend here. Today the border between Russia and Estonia runs along the river, and the two fortresses — the Russian one and Narva Castle with its Long Hermann tower — still look at each other. This is a unique fortress ensemble for all of Northern Europe. Inside the Ivangorod Fortress there are churches, walls with passages along the top, and a museum.
