Kronstadt Footstock

This is where the height of all the country's mountains and cities is measured from.
An unremarkable booth on the bridge over the Obvodny Canal is one of the most important points in the country. When you read that Elbrus is 5,642 meters high, it means "above zero of the Kronstadt footstock." Absolute heights across the entire territory of the former Soviet Union are measured from this mark — it is the Baltic height system. Water levels in Kronstadt have been measured since 1707. In 1840 the hydrographer Mikhail Reineke, who had recorded the water level for 15 years, carved a line of the average level on the abutment of the Blue Bridge. All subsequent measurements confirmed its accuracy — nothing had to be corrected.
