Cathedral of Peter and Paul

A church whose site was personally chosen by Alexander III.
At the end of the 19th century, Peterhof had no church capable of accommodating ordinary parishioners: the palace churches were small. In 1892, Protopresbyter Ioann Yanyshev asked for a new cathedral to be built, and Alexander III personally chose the site by Olgin Pond. Four architects were invited to the competition, among them Leonty Benois, but the project by Nikolai Sultanov in the spirit of ancient Russian churches won. The cathedral was built over 10 years and consecrated in 1905. During the war it stood right at the front line and was heavily damaged; today it is again visible from any point in New Peterhof.
