Peter's Travel Palace in Strelna

The wooden "roadside" palace — the oldest Petrine building in Strelna.
The modest wooden house on the hill by the Strelka River is the earliest building of Strelna preserved from Peter's times. It was intended for the tsar's stops on the way from St. Petersburg to the emerging Kronstadt and to the country residence. It was begun around 1716 according to Le Blond's design, and after his death the house was expanded by Michetti. The hill under the palace was left by a retreating glacier. Inside are Petrine interiors, gifts, and personal belongings; the palace is much cozier and more human than the formal residences.
