Oleg's Grave

A burial mound above the Volkhov where, according to legend, Oleg the Prophet lies.
Above the bank of the Volkhov, in the tract 'Sopki', rises a mound about 10 metres high. Folk tradition calls it the grave of Oleg the Prophet; in scholarly literature it is modestly referred to as 'sopka five-three' or 'Polaya sopka'. In 1820 it was partially excavated by archaeologist Khodakovsky: burnt bones, a spearhead from the 8th to early 9th century, a piece of iron and coals were found. There have been no excavations since. Local legends say the mound was poured 'by the handful', by the whole world, and sometimes Rurik is also mentioned in them. It is worth climbing for the view: the wide Volkhov and the ancient land around.
