Kamenny Island

An island of mansions and dachas: Petersburg's "old dacha" world.
Kamenny Island is several small islands separated by canals, between the Bolshaya and Malaya Nevka. According to legend, the name came from a giant stone on the bottom of the Neva that stuck out above the water near the southern bank. In 1713 Chancellor Golovkin settled here, then the island passed to Chancellor Bestuzhev-Ryumin. In the 20th century the island was filled with wooden and stone dachas in the Art Nouveau style — with turrets, verandas and stained-glass windows. From 1920 to 1989 it was officially called "Island of the Working People". Until the 1990s an oak planted by Peter the Great grew here.
