🗝️ Secret Peterhof

A warrior's face carved into a huge boulder. The sculptor is unknown.

In a ravine not far from the Sergievka palace, a gigantic stone face looks out from the ground. It is a granite boulder two by two meters in size, in which an unknown master carved the head of a man — most likely a warrior. The eyes are wide open, only the upper part of the face is visible above the ground, and the back of the head remained unfinished and has almost entirely sunk into the earth. The lower left part of the face is only outlined, and traces of rough chisel work remain — as if the master left and never returned. Many are reminded of the giant's head from Pushkin's «Ruslan and Ludmila». Today it is a cultural heritage site of federal significance. Look closely: there are other worked stones in the park, including three benches carved directly into boulders.

Tip: The head stands by the path from the palace to the former farm. Children will enjoy finding it themselves — don't give it away right away.
