🏛️ Palaces and Parks

A farm for 10 English cows that became a palace.

At first there was simply a farm here: in 1828 the architect Menelaus designed it «for 10 cows with the necessary services and a pavilion». The pavilion turned out toy-like — an iron roof painted to look like thatch, a terrace on columns decorated with birch bark. The cows were bought in England, and an English herdsman was hired along with them. Later the farm was added to and expanded, and under Alexander II it became a real palace and his favorite summer residence. A good example of how in Peterhof «simple country life» was an expensive imperial pastime.

Tip: The palace is open as a museum; check the hours. Nearby are the Cottage Palace and the Gothic Chapel.
