Peter the Great Botanical Garden

Peter's former Apothecary Garden — one of Russia's oldest greenhouses.
The garden on Apothecary Island traces its history to the Apothecary Garden established under Peter for growing medicinal herbs. Hence the name of the island. Today it is a department of the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences: palms, cacti and lianas grow in the greenhouses, and the Botanical Museum holds more than 80,000 plant specimens from all over the world. This is one of the few places in Petersburg where you can find yourself in the tropics in winter. In summer lotuses bloom here and the Victoria water lily — its huge leaves can bear the weight of a child.
